We were delighted to be invited to the book launch of 'Katie Bear goes to hospital' for The Children's Heart Surgery Fund.
It is a story and activities book which offers a step-by-step guide for children with congenital heart disease showing what happens before, during and after open heart surgery.
The book follows the main character; Katie Bear as she talks through her journey, sharing top tips and activity ideas to encourage children to ask questions and understand the process.
I illustrated the 36 page book which was written by Senior Clinical Psychologist Dr Rachel Avison (2nd left) and Children’s Cardiac Nurse Specialist Mike Fresson (end, left). The Emmerdale actor Dominic Brunt also took part in the book launch at Leeds General Infirmary.
It was an absolute pleasure to illustrate for the project and the team at The Children's Heart Surgery Fund were so informative and supportive throughout the whole process.
Here’s how you can get a copy of the new book:
- Patients (aged up to 10 years old) will receive a free copy of the new book at their first hospital meeting, after heart surgery has been agreed. Please speak to your Clinical Nurse Specialist for more information.
- Patients who have already had their first meeting, or had heart surgery between 1 February – 1 August 2017 can request a free copy. Please email email@example.com with your address, child’s name and date of surgery and CHSF will post one to you as soon as they can.
- You can also buy the book online for £3 (plus £2 postage and packing) or from our Brotherton Wing office for £5.
